Quest Native Spirit Kick Tail Longboard Skateboard

Quest Native Spirit Kick Tail Longboard Skateboard

The Quest Native Spirit Kick Tail Longboard Skateboard is an Amazon best-seller, but does it deserve this status? We reveal the truth about the board in this review.

Maple Wood Deck – Good or Bad?
Over the years, Quest have become a trusted go-to brand for budget longboards in the beginner to intermediate experience range. Despite being in what I call the “budget” range, the quality of the materials are actually quite good.

If you are a beginner, one of the important qualities you want in a board is that the deck is durable and can withstand the inevitable battering you will give it. The deck on this board is made from 7 plies of rugged maple wood, which can withstand significant impact force, and is less prone to chipping or cracking than bamboo decks. The downside to maple decks it’s that they are slightly heavier than bamboo decks, and give a firmer ride.

How To Turn This Board From “Good” to “Very Good”
The bearings on this board are absolutely fine for a beginner, however, my personal preference would be to buy some Bones Reds bearings when you buy this board. They only cost a few dollars, and they will turn this board from “good” to “very good”. The difference this will make to you in practical terms is that the board will “glide” for further without you having to push it along. You will also be able to reach greater speed.

What Type Of Riding Is This Good For?
There is no one-size-fits-all longboard on the market. When buying a longboard, you have to be mindful of what type of riding style you are wanting to do, whether it be downhill, tricks, cruising etc etc. At 40 inches in length, this Quest board is suitable for cruising and downhill riding, and freeriding. It’s too long for slaloms.

While tricks are usually done on shorter board, the addition of a kick-tail on this deck means it can be used for some tricks too. Overall, this makes for a very versatile product.

The wheels are relatively soft, which makes them more grippy, and makes for a stable ride. The flip side to this is that softer wheels increase friction and give you a slightly slower ride. Since this board is designed as a beginner to intermediate product, this should be seen as a positive, because in the early months of riding, you want stability and control, not rocket-sled speeds.

King-Pin Trucks – What Are They And What Do They Do?
A king-pin might sound like something that you would find in your car engine, but in the case of longboards, king-pins are the trucks that the wheels are mounted to. The difference between king-pin trucks and regular longboard trucks is that the king-pins tend to turn much more when you lean on the board. This means you can turn in a tighter radius than on a regular board.

Features and Specifications

  • 7 Ply All Hardwood Maple Deck
  • Durable 70x51mm 80A PU Wheels
  • Rugged & Lightweight 6″ “Aluminum Trucks
  • Smooth Riding and Responsive Reverse Kingpin Trucks
  • Precision ABEC7 Bearings and Hollow 4mm Risers

For such a  low price, this is a surprisingly versatile board, which is geared primarily towards the beginner and intermediate market. Although it is satisfactory “out of the box”, we recommend spending a small amount extra on Bones Reds bearings so that you have a really excellent board, that will keep you challenged and exhilarated in the long term.

The first thing you should notice about this Quest is the price! It is crazy low for such a good quality board. I was one of the first people to get one back in January 2015 and it has seen me through all that time, with just a few small chips to show for it.
This is amazing value for money.
If I had to take some points off it would be for the graphics on the underside of the board, but it’s still OK.

I bought this for my son’s birthday in June and so far he is very happy with it, and says it is very smooth to ride. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality for the price
